A successful ITT was held on Saturday 30th September for a core group of keen riders in conditions that turned out to be pretty good.....that Makara micro-climate to the fore! A southerley meant some help for the first part but a bit of a hard yakka through the gorge and at the end, but nice dry roads! Everyone gave it heaps.
In the end Ian Riddell won the day with an impressive time of 31 minutes, 25 seconds, closely followed by Mike Revell at 32 minutes, 44 s; Ric van Weede 33 minutes 48 s (performance impaired by illness, but superb commitment!); Stephanie Revell (yet again queen of the mountains!) 37 minutes 28 seconds and Suzanne (?Riddell, Ian's wife), a relative newcomer to the bike, at 45 minutes 49 s.
Thanks to Rebecca and Glenn Owen who performed finishing chute duties at the top of Ironside Rd, after riding the course with unofficial times (but it was about 20 minutes wasn't it Glenn????) and get bonus points for the series!
We then retired to the Village cafe (aka Rosa) to share stories from the road over coffee and scones.
Next ITT is Takarau gorge to top of Makara hill on Saturday Novemebr 4th - an even better time to test your form in the lead-up to both the Abel Tasman cycle challenge and Taupo. I belive Digger is listed to lead the ITT then, so get out and support him and the event if you can.
See you all on the road.
